"Other People"

Sometimes life takes unexpected turns, and sometimes those turns feel like the turns on the Wild Mouse ride at Lagoon Amusement Park.

Turn #1 - We had been trying to start a family with no luck. We had accepted that the timing was not right so we decided to be patient and focus on other areas of our lives. I started a new job on Monday, February 1st and that same day found out I was pregnant! We were shocked and over the moon excited! At this point we thought we understood what it meant to submit ourselves to the will of Heavenly Father... then came the next turn.

Turn #2 - Before I switched jobs, I worked downtown close to Judd's office so we went to lunch together everyday. When I started my new job Judd decided he was going to start running during lunch. That week after running Judd noticed some groin pain. By the weekend the pain still hadn't gone away and we decided to go into Urgent Care on Saturday night (February 6th). We were sent to the hospital to get an ultrasound because they couldn't determine quite what it was. While we were driving home after the ultrasound, Urgent Care called and asked us to pull over. Obviously worried and shaking at that point we pulled over into a parking lot. We were then told that Judd has testicular cancer. The doctor continued to explain to us she called a urologist and he agreed to see Judd first thing Monday morning for an exam and to schedule an orchiectomy (a surgical procedure to remove the testicle with the tumor).

Our hearts and spirits deflated. We were too young, too healthy, and really that kind of stuff only happens to "other people". We cried in each other's arms terrified of what the future held for us and our growing family.

We made it home and called our Bishop asking him to come give us each a blessing to help us make it through this turn in our lives. As he gave us the blessings we were made aware that God is aware of us and would take care of us. We often reflect back on those blessings and lean on them as a source of strength. We used that strength to begin calling our families to let them know what we had just found out.

We could hardly utter the word cancer. Each time we said it, it felt more real. That night was the hardest night of our lives. We slept in 15 minute increments waking up each time hoping that when we opened our eyes we'd wake up from this terrible dream. Finally morning came so we got up and went church. Again, we were made aware that God is aware of us. Each testimony touched our aching hearts. That day, after many prayers on our behalf, we began to understand what it truly means to feel a prayer. Overwhelming peace filled our hearts and home giving us the courage to submit ourselves to Heavenly Father's will and entrust our little family to His care and to His plan - whatever that might be.
